Continued celebration of 60 years with Guitar!
Tarleton’s Resurrection - John Dowland, 1563-1626. Published several books of lute and lute songs. Richard Tarleton, 15??-1588, was an jester to QE I and was a close friend of Dowland, who composed this piece after Tarleton’s death.
Queen Elizabeth’s Galliard - John Dowland. A Galliard is a dance and QE I was fond of them, she danced several each morning and they were very athletic. This is one of Dowland’s best and more difficult pieces.
Come Heavy Sleep - John Dowland. Originally a lute solo that later became a song, it is the basis for Benjamin Britten’s “Nocturnal” a famous guitar & orchestral composition dedicated to Julian Bream. Bream single handedly resurrected the lute from obscurity.
The Frog Galliard - John Dowland. QE I had a French lover who was known (privately) as “Her little frog”. Dowland composed this piece after her death. This is also one of Dowland’s more difficult pieces.
Mrs. Winter’s Jump - John Dowland. The Winter family was one of Dowland’s supporters and he lived with them for several years composing music for the family members.

Steve Walters
Celebrating 60 years of Guitar!

I started playing guitar during mid-summer of 1962 and started12th grade that September. I confess that I haven’t played for all 60 of those years, twice I’ve taken 4 to 8 year breaks which really set my playing back a lot, I’m still getting over the last one. And at age 76, old age is starting to take it’s toll on my modest skills, plus a fall severely dislocated a left-hand finger last November. But when I check into the nursing home, I’ll have a guitar with me.

The guitar (“Semper Dowland”) I’m playing was made by David Starbuck. David let me do a little bit of the wood work and I “French Polished” the guitar. It is a copy of a “Requinto” small body early guitar made by Antonio de Torres (1817-1892) who is credited with creating the modern classical guitar, but a few things make it unusual. The back and sides are very thin Maple while the sound board is spruce making it very “bright”, the fingerboard is ebony and the neck is Spanish cedar. It is tuned the same as a lute, three semi-tones higher than a guitar, and like a lute, it has 8-strings. The strings are synthetic gut, gut was the traditional string for lutes and vihuelas, so overall it sounds very similar. It is perfect for vihuela and lute music, my main interests.

Today’s Program...
  1. The Lord Hasting’s Good Morrow - by Francis Pilkington, 1565-1638. Published two books of Lute music and wrote choral music at a Cathedral where he was the musical director. Only eight measures long but a very “complete” miniature masterpiece.
  2. Curranta for Mrs. Elizabeth Murcott - Francis Pilkington. No clue about Mrs. Murcott.
  3. Pavana Muy Ilena Para Taner (“Pavan too full to play”) - Diego Pisador, 1509-1557+. Published “Libro de Musica de Vihuela” in 1552 containing 95 pieces. Little is known about him other than a big legal fight with his father and brother over the family estate.
  4. Dezilde Al Cavallero Que (“Tell the Gentleman”) - Diego Pisador. Take off on a popular choral piece for five voices by Nicolas Gombert (1495 - 1560) in 1556 opens with “Tell the gentleman not to complain, that I promise I won’t leave him”.
  5. The French King’s Masque - Anonymous. Clearly a Renaissance piece
